The fertility dolls or statuettes of the "Ashanti" people in Ghana in West Africa are carried by the
women because these dolls are attributed protective virtues by making the divinities very favorable; they
promote the birth of beautiful and healthy children.

Usually women, before marriage and throughout pregnancy, place these dolls in
their backs by wrapping them in clothes, hence their flattened shape.
